Governors
Welcome to Hummersknott
Here at Hummersknott the Governing Body works hard with the Head and other staff to provide the best education and care possible for every pupil in the school. We would like to ensure all are informed of what the school governing body does and who the school’s governors are and hope the information below helps to describe this. If you do have any further questions or require more information please initially contact the Clerk to the Governors as is detailed below.
Hummersknott Academy can have up to 11 Governors
- 2 Parent Governors who are elected by parents/carers at the school
- 5 Community/Co-opted Governors appointed by the governing body
- 2 Staff Governors split as follows:-
- 1 elected by teaching staff
- 1 elected by support staff
- Head Teacher who is automatically a member of the Governing Body.
A Governor’s term of office lasts four years.
Responsibilities
The Governing Body is responsible and accountable for all major decisions about the school and its future, and operates by acting as a ‘Critical Friend’ to the Executive Principal and his management team. We have a range of powers and duties including oversight of:
- Staffing
- Curriculum
- Agreeing targets for GCSEs, and the progress children make each year
- Finance/Budget
- Special Educational Needs
- Discipline and Attendance
- Religious Education
- Community Cohesion /Promoting Equality
- Health and Safety
There are six full Governing Body meetings held each year, two in each of the school terms. We have several sub-committees:
- Health & Safety (once per term)
- Pay review (once per year)
- Ad hoc as needed (eg to hear complaints or appeals)
Each parent or community governor is linked with a department and visits once/twice a year, or more frequently if needed, reporting back to the full governing body. Parent and community governors also take responsibility for another area of the school’s operations, such as health and safety. We have a budget for governor training and a Service Level Agreement with the Local Authority so governors can attend their training. We attend Governor meetings convened by the local authority to ensure we participate fully in the life of the wider community. We actively encourage all newly appointed governors to attend Induction Training and more experienced governors to continue to access training throughout their term of office. All new governors are “partnered” up with a governor mentor/buddy to help them settle in.
